From the Archives
When The Universe left London for Manchester in 1990, its extensive picture library came with it.
Occupying an annex to the newsroom, it rapidly fell into disuse with the advent of the electronic media age and the digital camera.
With the passage of time events, names and subject matters also became obscure and forgotten, and the countless stored images became increasingly dated and unusable in our modern publications.
Founded in 1860, The Universe spent most of its life in and around London’s Fleet Street, where it enjoyed unique and privileged access to Catholic events and personalities, at a time when the wider media world regarded Catholicism with suspicion and considerable misunderstanding.
Thus The Universe rapidly became both a significant Catholic news agency, and an important picture library for the rest of Fleet Street.
Gabriel Communications are now in the process of making our digital photo library available online for people to download.
